SAYTA Q1 2026: Two Books, One Oil & Gas Stage and a Funding Workshop That Cut Through the Noise
Volume 07 · Quarter 1, 2026
The short version: Q1 was a sprint. SAYTA published two books, advocated for youth economic inclusion at a major oil and gas conference, demystified the funding process with the NEF and got pulled onto live TV to unpack what Middle East tensions mean for South Africa's economy. Here's the recap with no filler.
Two New Books. One Mission. 📚
SAYTA teamed up with the International Trade Council to drop two publications aimed at the next generation of South African traders. Both are built to cut through jargon and hand you something you can actually use.
Trade-Ready Nation by Siyabonga Hans unpacks the ecosystem a country needs for trade to thrive and makes the case that South Africa's youthful population isn't a liability but is a competitive advantage waiting to be activated.
The New Exporters Handbook by Luyolo Vukile Dwesi is young South African's guide to buying and selling across borders. Takes the tangled terminology and processes of the export market and turns them into steps you can follow.
Why it matters: Trade education in SA has historically been locked behind consultants, government portals and 200-page policy documents. These two change the entry point.
SAYTA Took the Stage at the SA Oil & Gas Conference 🛢️
SAYTA joined industry leaders on the panel tackling supplier development, local content, jobs and industrialization in Southern Africa. The discussions were championed by Mr Adrian Strydom, Dr Steven Mathetsa (Pr.Nat.Sci), Mr Luyolo Dwesi, Mr Odwa Mtati, Mr Unathi Sonti and Ms Matiwane Mmabatho.
The conversation zeroed in on what it actually takes to plug young South Africans into the energy value chain: workforce development, training pipelines and the kind of sector growth that doesn't leave local businesses behind.
The takeaway: Energy transition talk is cheap. Skills pipelines and local content commitments are what move the needle and SAYTA's showing up where those conversations happen.
SAYTA x NEF: The Funding Workshop (and the Compliance Prequel) 💰
Most funding applications don't fail because the idea is bad. They fail because founders can't navigate the paperwork. SAYTA and the National Empowerment Fund set out to fix that.
Act One — The Compliance Webinar. A prequel session that walked through every mandatory document you need before you even think about clicking "submit." SARS and NEF both presented, meaning founders heard the rules straight from the people enforcing them.
Act Two — The Funding Workshop. A technical deep-dive on breaching the information barrier around funding applications. Mr Joel Mphela, NEF Divisional Executive in Venture Capital & Corporate Finance, made the case: empowering youth businesses isn't charity but rather a central theme to national economic growth and NEF is committed to the marginalized sectors that drive it.
Why this stands out: Compliance + capital in a single workflow. Most programs give you one and leave you to figure out the other.
In the Press: SAYTA on Newzroom Afrika 📺
When tensions flared in the Middle East and analysts started asking what it meant for South Africa's economy, Newzroom Afrika called SAYTA for commentary.
SAYTA's position: global shocks keep exposing the same question, how competitive is South African trade and how well can it absorb disruption? The answer, consistently is that SA needs a more diversified export base and better-capacitated young exporters. Less reliance on a handful of commodities and markets. More breadth, more depth, more young people in the game.
The Bottom Line
Q1 2026 was SAYTA prioritizing it's core mandate showing up in the rooms where trade policy, capital and youth enterprise intersect. Translating what happens there into tools young founders can actually use. Two books, one national broadcast moment, a funding workshop that closed the information gap and a seat at the table on one of the continent's biggest energy conversations.
